Marie-Joëlle and I were very sorry to hear of Bryan’s passing. As a young Tutor in Cotton Bryan and Mary were ever welcoming to both of us and always made you feel valued. Bryan talked of anything and everything and I learned a lot about school mastering and a fair bit about economics along the way even though I was a linguist! Looking back I realise I was so lucky to have him as a guiding figure in my early years. One enduring memory was a junior rugby game on Far Polo. I was training an U15 team in which there were several Cotton boys who Bryan had come down to watch. More and more frustrated on the touch line he could bear it no longer; on he came and joined in at stand-off, suit and all. A few shimmies, dummies, passes and kicks later we all knew we had seen something special. Bryan brushed the mud from his suit and shoes and headed back up the Barby Road no doubt to a cup of tea and that pile of scripts he pored over so meticulously. One of many fond memories of a truly great man.
